James Smallwood is a native of East Texas and is a professor of history at Oklahoma State University. He is the author and/or editor of more than twenty books. His Time of Hope, Time of Despair: Black Texans During Reconstruction won the Texas State Historical Society's Coral H. Tullis Award in 1982 for the best book of the year on Texas history.
